Not bad for Sun, this box is actually somewhat price competitive. They're finally waking up and dropping their prices. We get our dual 2.8Ghz Xeon, 6GB RAM, boxes from Dell for $5k after some serious discounts. The 1Ghz Sparc chips can't compete but are not too far behind. Plus I heard 1.3GHz sparc chips are around the corner.

If you want stability and manageability, and better network I/O than Linux, this might be attractive. I'd personally like to try it out as an Oracle server, when serving up data over NFS.

These are just now available. We just got one of these at work and did our usual benchmarks. Yup, it's about 10% faster than our 900MHz Sun Blade 2000 machines. BFD. I think we were all hoping the Ultrasparc IIIi chip would somehow kick the pants off the older IIi, MHz for MHz. Oh well, the price is good, and the 1u-ness is cool...
