My wife and I paid a visit to this German deli that I used to frequent in high school and
while home from college, Mattern
Sausage & Meat, or "Sausage Meat" for short. While the area around it has changed as
you would expect (a bit oddly, a new Wienerschnitzel now shares its parking lot--real
German over here, and next door, der Wienerschnitzel), to my complete shock, the store
inside hasn't aged a day in 10 years. The same friendly people worked behind the counter,
the same meats were behind the glass, the same German imported foods lined the shelves,
and even their prices haven't gone up ($3.20 for a sandwich). Having since grown
accustomed to the computerized age of constant obsolescence I found it a bit refreshing to
find anything from my younger years still alive and well :-).
We grabbed a Black Forest ham and smoked turkey sandwich and had a picnic. Delicious stuff. |

My family started going there long before I was born. I go there whenever I
want flat out amazing meat. Every time I get some Bratwurst and Sauerkraut,
it just keeps getting better and better each time. The people are so nice!
Even the people that shop there are nice and you end up chatting with them
pretty much the whole time. I can't wait to go again.

They've watched me age and know my face well from ordering Poor Boy sandwiches for myself and family to specific bakery products which they order from a German bakery in Downey.
